Problems arising while fabricating temporary crown:
Problem : Occlusal errors or void
- An impression that has not been fully reseated filled with provisional material often can cause occlusal errors or voids.
Solution:
- Trim away any interproximal tags with scissors before filling and reseat the impression.when using syringe material, keep the syringe tip in the material to prevent the incorporation of air.
Problem: Locking on provisional restoration
Provisional restorations can become locked on the preparation if material flows into undercuts formed by the proximal surfaces of adjacent teeth.
Solution:
- While provisional restoration is still soft and adaptable remove the material from gingival embrasure space with Hollenback instrument.
- After removal, any excess flash should be trimmed with a pair of scissors; then, the crown should be reseated multiple times to ensure that it does not lock into place when set.
Problem: Marginal discrepancies
Most distortions of the margin occur when the provisional crown is first removed from the preparation.
Solution: If the marginal discrepancy occurs with a provisional resin crown, the simplest solution is to reline it with more material and reseat it for setting. To help the seating of the provisional, do not fill the whole crown with resin, but confine the reline material to the inner aspect of the crown margin.
Problem: Removal of provisional
Once provisional has been temporarily cemented you want to be able to remove it easily.
Solution: To make removal easier, temporary cement should be applied around the inner aspect of the margin. Equal lengths of base and catalyst with a small amount of modifier or petroleum jelly can be used to weaken the cement for easy removal.
Home care instructions:
- Bite and chew carefully on provisional restoration or coverage and avoid sticky food.
- When flossing do not pop the floss onto and out of the contact. Once the floss is placed below the contact, pull the floss through the facial or lingual side.
- If the provisional coverage is loose or lost, contact the office immediately to have it replaced.
